DISCIPLESHIP

Because of Christ’s commission of discipleship (Matthew 28:19), the Discipleship Ministry Team at McIlwain Presbyterian Church is committed to discipling the body of Christ in three main areas:

  • Knowledge of the character and works of God
  • Equipment in the service of the body and world
  • Development of a biblical world and life view

It is our goal that the entire body of Christ at McIlwain—children, youth and adults—truly grow in the knowledge the Creator and rest in God’s sufficient grace through Jesus Christ, submit to one another in the joyful service of the covenant community and learn to understand and respond to our world from a biblical perspective.

  • Nursery

McIlwain’s nursery is located in the building behind the sanctuary on the corner of 13th and Moreno Street.  We nurture children 6 weeks to 4 years. We utilize qualified paid nursery staff, each of whom has been vetted by interview and background check.  On Sunday mornings and evenings, member volunteers from the congregation spend time with the littles, as well as the paid nursery staff. We provide snacks, drinks, wipes, and only ask that you provide us with the diapers your child will be in and their bottles with formula/milk.  We have toys, which are wiped down and cleaned after each time the nursery is used. There are two separate rooms, one for 6 weeks to 2 years, and the toddler room for 2 years to 4 years.  We also have a sleep/nursing room that staff and ladies only are allowed in.

We believe discipleship starts early, first and most importantly in your own home, but also with the encouragement and resources of the covenant community.  To assist families in this important privilege we feature a Sunday School time for children 18 months to 4 year.  This class begins at 9:30 am; after class is over, we give all the children snacks.  We utilize a pager system. When you drop off your child, we will have you fill out information on them for our staff to keep, and you will sign them in on the sign in sheet with the number of the pager that is handed to you.

I look forward to meeting you and your family!  If you have any other question please email me at juli@mcilwain.org.

    In Christ,

    Juli Poole

  • Children's Ministry

McIlwain's dedicated ministry to children ages 2 years old through 6th grade has the blessing of committed teachers whose faithful contribution runs over many years. Long-time teachers staff our growing and active ministry both in Sunday School and on Wednesday evenings during the school year.  Our teachers’ heart is to see the Gospel proclaimed to the precious children of our covenant families as well as to children coming to McIlwain through our bus ministry.

One of the highlights of our children’s program is our annual Vacation Bible School ministry. A yearly staff of loving and energetic adults and teens operates this ministry. In addition to VBS, children participate in activities during the major Christian holidays: Palm Sunday, Easter, and Christmas, as well as fellowships through out the summers. Underneath the oversight of our Children’s Discipleship Coordinator, we provide gospel centered programs and curricula aimed at assisting parents with the spiritual growth of their child. We also have a team of volunteer staff that is committed to teaching the gospel and leading little ones to Jesus. We would love to have you join us this Sunday!

  • Youth Ministry

At McIlwain our vision for Youth (7th through 12th grades) focuses not just on discipling young men and women but also on equipping parents to disciple their adolescent children as it does on faithfully teaching those same children when they are under our care.  For this reason we are committed to providing parents with the tools, teaching and encouragement they need.  Likewise, we encourage a high parental involvement in our Youth activities and fellowship opportunities.

In addition to Youth Sunday school meets on Sunday and Youth Fellowship on Wednesday nights during the school year, McIlwain’s youth enjoy special activities throughout the year and have the opportunity to participate in short-term missions in the summer.

  • Young Adults Bible Study

YABS is a multifaceted ministry designed to address the specific needs of the church in the modern era by focusing on issues that most impact young adults and by extension equip them to give an answer for the hope that lies within them. As a ministry of the church, YABS exists so that God is glorified, sinners are brought to Christ, the Word of truth is proclaimed, the various needs of the Church body met, and the saints are edified.

It is our firm belief that young adults must be challenged in an individualized setting that affords them the opportunity to engage in critical thinking and formulate varied applications by using biblical principles. Thus, YABS provides the proper forum and format in which to address some of the secular challenges to the intellectual credibility of the Reformed Christian faith that face young adults today.

  • Adult Discipleship Opportunity

Learning about and growing in the grace of God in Christ doesn’t end with graduation! Following after and learning from the Lord Jesus is a rich, lifelong privilege.  McIlwain offers adults discipleship opportunities in Sunday School, small group Bible studies called LIFE Groups and various men’s and women’s groups.  These classes and groups primarily study the books of the Bible, though topical, current issue, apologetic and worldview studies are often offered as well.
